Basic Lessons which teach the sounds of American English

Detailed instructions
for all 52 American English sounds

Watch as our animated mouth shows you where to put your tongue, jaw, and lips for each sound. Watch our video of an authentic American English speaker as she makes each sound.  We also provide detailed text descriptions along with specific tips just for native Spanish speakers.

We also identify which of the 52 sounds are problem sounds for native Spanish speakers.  Voice recordings and analysis of hundreds of speakers has gone into our database of sounds.  Knowing which sounds are problematic enables us to customize the software for you so we can target the problem sounds quickly and effectively.

Record & Compare

Record yourself saying each phoneme and use our waveform generator to instantly compare your speech to our model's speech.

Helpful Videos

Accent Master contains videos which welcome you to accent learning and guide you through the many features of the software.

Listening Games

The first step in learning how to produce a new phoneme is learning how to listen for it.  Accent Master provides many games and exercises which work on your listening skills.  In fact for every problem phoneme that native Spanish speakers have we have at least one listening game for phonemes (level 1), for words (level 2), and for sentences (level 3).

Accent Master has thousands of model word recordings and thousands of model sentence recordings.

Instructions

Every screen has an "Instructions" button which will provide you with detailed help specific to that screen.  The above example shows the help page for the Bingo game.

Instructions are available in English & Spanish.

Easy to use navigation buttons

Every screen has easy to use navigation buttons to guide you to where you want to go.

Speaking Games

Accent Master provides many games and exercises which work on your speaking skills.  In fact for every problem phoneme that native Spanish speakers have, we have at least one speaking game or exercise for phonemes (level 1), for words (level 2), and for sentences (level 3).  Of course in every speaking game and exercise, once you record yourself you will easily be able to compare your recording to our model speaker's recording.

Word Puzzles

We include a number of these word puzzles simply as a fun way to practice sounding out new sayings.  For example the above puzzle's solution is: "Spring is here".  These puzzles are only included as a fun way to play with sounds and words.

Shuffle Button

All Accent Master games come with our exclusive "Shuffle" feature.  This feature will scramble the questions and answers so that each time you replay a game it will truly be a new game.  This keeps playing the games fresh and interesting.

Even More Games

Accent Master provides many games for each problem phoneme.  We provide so many fun games because it is important that you practice each problem phoneme by itself (level 1), in words (level 2), and in sentences (level 3).  Our interactive games let you practice at your own pace while keeping learning fun.

Instant Sound

In all of our phoneme games and exercises we prominently show the phoneme being worked on in the upper left corner of the screen along with a sample word using the phoneme.

Simply pass the mouse over the phoneme to hear it or pass the mouse over the sample word to hear the word.  If you click on the phoneme or word you will taken to the detailed instruction page on how to produce that sound.

Instant Feedback

All of our listening games provide instant feedback letting you know right away if your answer was right or wrong.  Studies have shown that providing instant feedback accelerates the learning process.

Advanced lessons which teach fluency

Word Stress

Word stress refers to the manner in which we stress or emphasize a syllable in multi-syllabic words. A word pronounced in Standard American English, but incorrectly stressed can be difficult for a native speaker to understand.

Spanish speakers need to be careful not to simply add volume to the stressed part of the word, but to change the pitch of the stressed syllable. At times increasing the volume of the stressed part of the word can sound aggressive to the native American English speaker.

To teach proper word stress Accent Master provides video instruction with tips specific to native Spanish speakers, many examples, listening games, and recording exercises.

Linking

A common characteristic of non-native speakers of Standard American English is choppiness. Where, each word is spoken as if separate from the other words in the sentence. There is a lack of flow to the speech pattern. This choppy quality can be distracting to the listener. To speak Standard American English smoothly you must learn when to link the final sound of one word to the initial sound of the next.

In the Spanish language each word is pronounced individually. This is much different than in American English where words flow together.

To teach proper linking Accent Master provides video instruction with tips specific to native Spanish speakers, many examples, listening games, and recording exercises.

Intonation

Intonation is the rise and fall of pitch in the flow of speech. It is possible to convey different meanings and moods through intonation without changing a word you are saying. If one uses the intonation of their native language they may be perceived as having a strong foreign accent, even if they are producing all of the English sounds in a Standard American manner. Different intonation patterns can cause confusion or be misleading. A speaker may be perceived as more uncertain or more emotional than they intend to. You may inadvertently be expressing a feeling or meaning by incorrect use of intonation.

To teach proper Intonation Accent Master provides video instruction with tips specific to native Spanish speakers, many examples, listening games, and recording exercises.
